Collega's Nachtwey laten weinig heel van "War Photographer"

When War Photographer, a documentary on James Nachtwey was shown in the Chobi Mela III photo fair on one of the evening presentations, photographers and critics tore apart the myth that is propagated by the film in the discussion that followed.

"Without taking away the artistic qualities of James Nachtwey's powerful images, I find the film tremendously flawed," stated Pedro Meyer, celebrated Mexican photographer. "Instead of allowing his pictures to speak for themselves, James has lent himself to a documentary that is portraying him as a self-suffering photographer ready to save the world."

Referring to the segment in which James Nachtwey was choking on the fumes when he pictured the sulfur mines in Indonesia, photographer-turned-lawyer Rupert Grey said: "Based on my own experiences of photographing the sulfur mines in Indonesia, I think the portrayal is highly exaggerated."

"We have to be very careful with the label of war photographer," concluded Peter Fryer, who has spent the last 15 years working in Palestine and Lebanon. "Some people would label the situation at Palestine a war but others would call it an occupation."
